DCR and DCT surgery

DCR/DCT Surgery

Dacryocystitis is an infection of the lacrimal sac secondary to obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct. It causes pain, swelling over the inner aspect of the lower eyelid and watering from the eyes. DCR surgery aims to eliminate dacryocystitis and increase tear drainage to relieve epiphora (tears running down the face).

Pterygium service

Pterygium

The archived Services page repeats the DCR/DCT description under this heading: Dacryocystitis is an infection of the lacrimal sac secondary to obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct. It causes pain, swelling over the inner aspect of the lower eyelid and watering from the eyes. DCR surgery aims to eliminate dacryocystitis and increase tear drainage to relieve epiphora (tears running down the face).

Ptosis service

Ptosis

Ptosis surgery tightens the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid. As you get older, the levator muscle can stretch and weaken, causing the eyelid to sag. If a sagging eyelid interferes with vision, surgery may help improve your vision. It can also be performed if an eyelid has begun to sag or there is a difference in the height of your eyelids.

Refractive error correction

Refractive Error and Correction

Refractive error means that the shape of your eye does not bend light correctly, resulting in a blurred image. The main types are myopia (nearsightedness), hypermetropia (farsightedness), presbyopia (loss of near vision with age) and astigmatism. It can be corrected by spectacles, contact lenses or surgery.

Eyelid conditions

Entropion and Ectropion

Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid is turned inward (inverted), causing the eyelashes to rub against the eyeball. Ectropion is a condition in which the eyelid is turned outward (everted), so that its edge does not touch the eye. Both can be corrected by a minor surgical procedure.

Strabismus service

Strabismus

Squint is a condition where the eyes point in different directions. One eye may turn inwards, outwards, upwards or downwards while the other eye may look differently. In an early condition it can be corrected by spectacles or exercise; in a secondary stage it will be corrected by surgery.

Conjunctivitis service

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or swelling of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the thin transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. Often called “pink eye,” conjunctivitis is a common eye disease, especially in children. The archived source describes it as usually self-diagnosable.

Symptoms include redness, itching and tearing of the eyes. It can also lead to discharge or crusting around the eyes. The archived page lists pain in the eyes; redness, irritation, redness of the eyelid, discharge, dryness, itchiness, puffy eyes, swollen lining of the eye or watery eyes; nasal congestion, runny nose or sneezing; and sensitivity to light.

The archived page says to stop wearing contact lenses while affected. It often resolves on its own, but treatment can speed recovery. Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with antihistamines. Bacterial conjunctivitis can be treated with antibiotic eye drops.
